Santa María Island
The island is located in the south central part of Chile, about 550 km south of Santiago, Administratively, it belongs to the municipality of Coronel in the Bio Bio region, but is located a few dozen kilometers away on the Pacific Ocean that separates it from the mainland. Nearly 2,200 people live in its lush vegetation, wetlands, cliffs, and sandy beaches, inhabited by the Mapuche before Spanish colonization. There are no roads, no heavy vehicular traffic, and no industrial pollution from the cities. Only artisanal fishing and subsistence farming exist.
Santa María Island is an excellent birdwatching destination, a unique refuge for birdlife. Numerous species can be observed on the island, such as the Pilpilén, the Field Plover, the Snowy Plover, and pelagic seabirds.
